The Artist

The artist Steve Carter retired from active duty as a US Army Sergeant Major at Fort Monroe, Virginia. With 28 years of military service, his passion has been to use art to proclaim his faith in God and to honor the sacred stories in those around him. Though an accomplished painter and knife maker, his favored medium is sculpture. His works often depict the routine elements of life. It’s in the images of those inconspicuous moments that individual character, honor, and strength can be translated into sculpture.

While all of his works have been produced in lost wax cast bronze, he found the cost of producing these bronzes often made them unattainable to the very people whose story he was telling. Soldiers are not wealthy. To overcome the cost barrier and make his sculptures more affordable, he now produces his sculptures in cold-cast bronze. This process uses an art resin imbedded with powder bronze which is applied under pressure to produce sculptures that are identical in appearance to lost wax cast bronze. The major differences between the cold-cast bronze and the lost wax cast bronze are weight, durability and cost.

Steve currently has paintings on display in the military Police Museum at Fort Leonard Wood, the Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, and the Chaplain Museum at Fort Jackson.

“My prayer is that these sculptures touch your spirit and remind you that God has created us just a little below the angels.”
